During the NFL Scouting Combine, Jerry Reese said the team wouldn’t rule out drafting a running back, even though it’s one of the team’s strengths. He also added that there were “some good running backs in this class”.
“Just because we have good running backs doesn’t mean we won’t take a running back. We’ll try to take good players at every position. It really doesn’t make any difference.”
If anything, I think we’ll take a running back later in the draft. We were successful with a mixture of Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw last year, so I doubt we’ll mess with it too much. Derrick Ward’s contract has expired, but there’s still a chance he’ll sign with the team. He did a good job filling in for Jacobs while he was hurt, so he could be another option if he returns. I don’t expect Reuben Droughns to return next season. I’ve never been a fan of him. My feeling is that Reese is looking to strike gold in the later rounds like he did when he drafted Bradshaw in the 7th round.
