Giants interested in Trent Green
February 29, 2008With Todd Collins and Cleo Lemon now signed, the Giants may turn to Trent Green as their answer for a new backup quarterback. According to the Daily News, Green’s agent has said they have talked to the Giants and are interested.
Green had two concussions in a span of 13 months while playing for the Chiefs.
Green is great when he’s healthy and more than serviceable as a backup. Green will have protection if he signs with New York, so there’s less of a chance he suffers from another concussion.
Samuel is officially an Eagle
February 29, 2008Asante Samuel and the Eagles have reached a six year deal.
Good for them. I think Samuel benefited from the system he played in while he was playing for New England. He’ll still be good, but not quite as good as he was with the Patriots.
Giants show interest in Webster and Kalu
February 29, 2008The New York Giants have shown interest in Buffalo Bills cornerback Jason Webster. The Patriots, Seahawks, and Bills have all shown interest in Webster.
Defensive end N.D. Kalu is still talking with the Houston Texans, but he’s also talking to the Giants about a possible deal.
Samuel close to deal with Eagles
February 29, 2008Asante Samuel is rumored to be close to signing a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. The deal is rumored to be worth $47.2 million and five years long.
Taking on a big contract like this could take the Eagles out of the Gibril Wilson race..
Torbor signs with Miami
February 29, 2008Linebacker Reggie Torbor signed with the Dolphins on Friday.
Torbor took over as the starting linebacker when Mathias Kiwanuka was placed on injured reserve.
Giants and Vikes were interested in Cleo Lemon
February 29, 2008Cleo Lemon agreed to a contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but according to sources around the league the Jaguars weren’t the only team interested. Sources say the Giants and Vikings also expressed interest in Lemon.
I don’t really understand Lemon’s decision to sign with the Jaguars. He doesn’t have a chance at starting over David Garrard in Jacksonville. He would’ve had a better shot winning the job in Minnesota against Tavaris Jackson.
Replacement options for Wilson (if he leaves)
February 29, 2008We all know Gibril Wilson is looking for a deal worth roughly $5 million a year. Now that free agency has started and he still hasn’t reached a deal with the Giants, it’s likely he won’t be back next season.
According to Mike Garafolo, the Giants could potentially look at Jets safety Erik Coleman, Jaguars safety Sammy Knight, or Patriots safety Eugene Wilson as a replacement for Gibril Wilson.
Another option would be the draft, but this year there’s a pretty weak safety class. Kenny Phillps, Reggie Smith, and DaJuan Morgan are all possibilities, but it’s unlikely the Giants will take a safety after the departure of Kawika Mitchell.
Raiders interested in Gibril Wilson
February 29, 2008The Raiders are interested in signing free agent safety Gibril Wilson. The Raiders are actively looking to trade safety Michael Huff, so Wilson would likely replace him.
The Raiders join the Eagles and Jaguars as teams interested in Wilson.
Bills sign Kawika Mitchell
February 29, 2008Former Giants linebacker Kawika Mitchell signed with the Buffalo Bills Friday on the first day of free agency.
Financial terms of the contract haven’t been released yet.
Edit 2:24 PM: The deal is reportedly worth $17.5 million for five years.
I really really don’t like this. Mitchell was great last season and really caught fire towards the end of the season. I consider it a big loss that basically shows the Giants are going to take either a linebacker or safety in the first round of the draft. With Mitchell gone and Reggie Torbor likely signing with Miami the Giants are looking weak at linebacker now.
